Extra Life Radio podcasting excellence

extralife

For what it is worth, our favorite tech podcast in terms of all-round entertainment is Extra Life Radio.

Scott Johnson is a podcasting cartoonist who hosts a round table of quick-witted, albeit laddish cartoon and tech geeks. Once a week for a hundred and something weeks they have been running over everything from Wii's to toilet jokes, pooh to iPhones, and games to, by jingo, cartoons. It is compulsive, and at times, repulsive, but always engaging listening! And I say this as someone with zero interest in cartoons and games.

A little extra life than most podcasts

Looking around the technology podcast scene, maybe you learn more tech news from TWiT, and the quintissentially English BoagWorld podcasts are very web design oriented. Both those netcasts podcasts are well-paced and light-hearted, but for all-round laughs and zip, plus interesting content, ELR comes out slightly ahead.

Extra quality podcast

As with most things in life, it is the small details that make the biggest differences. There are plenty of examples of touches that podcasters at high profile sites like Boing Boing would do well to emulate!

Skype and high-speed internet have made multi-contributor podcasts feasible. Somehow though, even techno-excessive TWiT is occasionally plagued by someone talking like their head is stuffed down a toilet bowl. Maybe Scott Johnson flies all his pals into his apartment to avoid those sorts of glitches, but whatever the tactic, it makes for a very consistent podcast in terms of audio quality.

The overall production quality is also near radio broadcast level, in part thanks to links and intro jingles put together by a musician friend in his lunch break - a nice friend to have. Although, listening to the main jingle, one wonders how well their super quality side swipes go down in the South? Presumably America is a big enough place not to worry about the opinion of a few million rednecks?

Extra quality comedy content

As someone who enjoys jokes like, "What do 3,14 and 43 have in common? They all come with rice!" I grin a lot at their sophisticated impersonations of offended Orientals. I don't know how high they rank for bad taste, but it makes me laugh. As a grown man with a wife, I also appreciate cheap shots aimed at the host by his mates. That is the price of close friends who clearly respect you enough to ridicule you at every opportunity.

Cool cartoon beans and keep it up guys, The Pisstakers give five good fingers to Extra Life Radio.

We have a cartoon section too btw
