Indian Internet ban and No Gas Day
01 May 07 Filed in:Internet
A little while ago, I mentioned an article in the Register, saying that Indian students had their internet access turned off for 90 minutes a night - and they weren't happy. The reason for this invasion of human rights? The Dean was really worried that his kids had lost the will to socialise. The cheek of it, assuming that the internet has spoiled the art of conversation. Wasn't that TV's legacy?
In an effort to prove that they weren't socially dysfunctional, Indian students resorted to downloading movies to carry them through the 90 minute down-time. That's the spirit. No live internet, just the bottled version. Rest easy Dean and students, the addiction has been beaten.
A bit like "No Gas Day". Convince yourselves that by delaying your purchase of gas by 24 hours, you are saving the planet, then carry on polluting with a clear conscience!
Got any other examples of rule-bending that highlights an issue rather than diminishes it?
btw, if you are looking for any growing English-speaking markets for your blog, check out India and friends of Hamrash. But make sure you target your articles at under-25's with no life and an interest in Bollywood films!!
