The Impulsive Buy: review
Feb/07 Filed in: Impulsive buy

The Impulsive Buy claims to put the "ew" in reviews of foodstuffs, snacks and miscellaneous household products. If you look at the easy-to-read type face, lots of color, pleasant layout, plus an adept writer, the blog has all the elements of an engaging and amusing port of call for internet users. It succeeds, to a degree, but overall, it is more "eh?" then "ew".
Impulsive Buy covers some repulsive products
It certainly has a unique approach to explaining the intricacies of smoothies, wraps and dating aids - equating the aforementioned topics to cat's diarrhoea, condemned MacDonalds fare, and a dating alternative, should you fail to find a nice girl in the Sex and Relationships department of a book shop. There are a lot of noteworthy products and the content is very eclectic and he is a funny guy, but...
Impulsive writing style is OTT
As a Pisstaker, I am the first to accept that if you wish to explore any topic in a light hearted manner, writing stylised Washington post-esque articles is a no-no. I also acknowledge that, of course, the more off-the-wall you write, the more distinctive you become as a writer and the better your chances are of capturing people's attention.
He made me grin on a few occasions, but, lost me most of the time. Maybe I am too stiff and old these days, but there is a fine line between whacky clever and whacky incoherent/drug-induced writing. In all honesty, I think this writer errs on the side of lunacy, much like the great Goon, Spike Milligan. (He lost me too!) To be fair, being likened to Spike should be a compliment, but the difference is, Spike Milligan had a track record that showed him to be a bona fide writer and a funny guy.
This blog writer is talented funny, but can he really write? Probably, but I don't know. The thing is, from the gun, he has chosen to go "out there" beyond mainstream, heading off into exploratory improv land, and to me he writes like he has no discipline. ie he just shoots from the hip as the whim takes him, and seems loopy at times for no reason. (Please explain the sense of purpose behind the Beer Pong table post?) Consequently, he is just a little short on credibility for my liking.
Conclusion of Impulsive Buy
I recommend reading the blog, because the humor may well be for you, but for me, he comes across as someone trying too hard to be funny - or is he on the whacky baccy in front of his keyboard? Maybe he should review some alternative substances, then I would get where he was coming from, and fall into line along with the rest of his not inconsiderable readership.
Disclosure: I came across this blog in ReviewMe, but did not receive $100 for this review. In fact, I did it because it seemed like a good idea at the time.
